SDP launches a petition to increase minimum wage

Bojan Zeković

Social Democratic Party (SDP) will launch a petition to finally increase the minimum wage that, after a series of taxes imposed by the government. Thus, Montenegro would not be the worst country in the region. This was announced by the member of SDP Council and Presidency Bojan Zekovic.

“SDP will start collecting signatures to increase the minimum wage as of next week. The aim of this initiative is to increase the minimum wage in Montenegro from the current €193 a month, which is the lowest in the region, to 50% of the average salary, ie €250 a month,” said Zekovic.

He called to mind that in June 2017, along with MP Rasko Konjevic, he sent the initiative to increase the minimum wage.

“The discussion on the Initiative was postponed several times, first for September, then for the end of the year. At the last session of the Social Council it was agreed that the initiative would be discussed by the end of December 2017 and that finance minister would attend it. However, none of the promises was kept. Council members were not informed about the reasons for such behaviour. Instead of increasing the minimum wage, 2018 began with increased VAT, higher excise taxes, as well as increased electricity and fuel prices, which resulted in a rise in product prices and transportation costs,” he added.
