Šehović: We won’t allow political abuse of children

Damir Šehović

Minister of Education, Mr Damir Šehović, said he wouldn’t allow political abuse of children in schools, following the initiation of disciplinary action against Ms Rada Višnjić, a teacher in the elementary school in Bar who tasked children with drawing a tricolor.

“Considering several incidents in connection to the education systems that took place recently, where schools were put in political context or were place of political iconographies, we are obliged to express straightforward opinion”, Minister said.

Ministry of Education has always acted in accordance with the law and with the intention to improve education system.

“I believe we promote openness to communication, constructive debate and expression of different opinions and views”, said Mr Šehović.

He states there are certain topics and kinds of behavior that seem to be totally unlawful and unreasonable.

“One of such topics is exerting direct or indirect political influence in the classroom. Not only is it unlawful, but it’s also immoral. Fundamental principles of every democratic, civil society, stipulate protection of classroom from any such attempts”, says Mr Šehović.

In that context, nobody who is part of the education system will allow that.

“We’ll use every legal authorizations at our disposal to sanction everybody who tries to abuse children in a primitive way. Our schools will not be place of political fights and our children won’t be victims of aggressive, counter-productive and unlawful political influences”, says Mr Šehović.

As the most responsible person in the education system, Mr Šehović will make sure every child is what they need to be – children.
