Sustainable forest management more important than ever

The beauty of landscapes is significant and we’re all unified by our appreciation of the beauty of our forests and diversity of plants, birds and animals. The fact is that our appreciation hasn’t saved them from piecemeal degradation over the years.

Environmentalists and businessmen warn of the main obstacles -financing & land management concept and concessions- which are supposed to protect our natural treasures.

Montenegrin Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is aware of the issue and is due to change the concept of forest management. The new model would include not only the forest revenue collection and better conditions for availability of raw materials for woodworkers, but a complete reorganization of the concession model aiming to create better grounds for afforestation, i.e. conservation of forest resources.

“Reorganization of the concession system, which envisages establishing of a company owned by the state to manage forests, will contribute to reorganization of affairs related to afforestation and nursery work,” the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development told Pobjeda daily.

The Ministry reminded of the 2005 Reforestation program adopted for a 10-year period, which envisages that 2 million seedlings a year should be planted. On the other hand, the Ministry claims that it is not possible to keep in pace with this number as reforestation depends on numerous other requirements.
