Szijjarto: Montenegro and Serbia deserve to join the EU sooner – 2022 realistic deadline

Peter Sijarto

Hungarian foreign minister Peter Szijjarto urged the EU to accelerate the process of accession Serbia and Montenegro, and said that 2022 could be a realistic deadline for enlargement.

“We support the faster progress of Serbia and Montenegro. And the year 2022 could be realistic deadline for the EU’s enlargement to Serbia and Montenegro,” Szijjarto said.

Hungary’s foreign minister says he is disappointed with the new Enlargement Strategy for the Western Balkans. At the meeting of the EU Council of Ministers in Sofia, he said that the integration and enlargement process must be “much, much faster”.

“We respect the progress made by these two countries. We also support others in their efforts to be integrated into the EU. But as far as Serbia and Montenegro is concerned, 2022, it is very possible deadline,” Szijjarto said at the meeting.

He pointed out that the United States, Russia and Turkey had their own “strategies” for the Western Balkans and that only the EU was “extremely slow” in this regard.
