A viral rumour of virus-containing paracetamol is confirmed untrue by the Montenegrin Medicines Agency. Rumours have been circulating on social media that P/500 paracetamol pills contain „a deadly virus“.

In early 2017, social media warnings about paracetamol allegedly contaminated with the Machupo virus began circulating. According to these warnings, new “very white and shiny” P/500 paracetamol has become contaminated with the pathogen with high mortality rate. However, several responsible institutions for medicines control (in Malesia, Indonesia, Singapore) shut down these rumours stating that locally-registered paracetamol pills were safe.

According to the Montenegrin Medicines Agency, neither Montenegro nor the World Health Organization (WHO) has ever registered the use of paracetamol associated with an infection. The Agency reiterated that Machupo virus cannot survive the pill-making process and it cannot live in dry environments.
