Zenka: The state will get its property

Mehmed Zenka

In an interview with Dan daily, minister for human and minority rights Mehmed Zenka told he would be proud if only he could establish good relations with the Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) in Montenegro, and also stressed there won’t be any confiscation of the church property. He also noted that what belongs to state should be returned to it.

On the question whether the government gave up on the idea of confiscating monasteries and churches from the Metropolitanate of Montenegro and the Littoral, Zenka answered asking “Why are we always talking about churches?”

“The Islamic Community and the Catholic Church have their own properties as well. This is not about the seizure of property. Confiscation is too harsh word to be used. There’s no way the state will seize something the church received from its supporters or what it had built from its own funds. One of the solutions is to return the state what belongs to it,” emphasized minister Zenka.

And minister Zenka then explained that the state owns what was registered in cadastre as state-owned before year of 1920, excluding all the property owned by a church or mosque. He also emphasized that the state never interferes in the work of religious communities, as each one of it operates under its own rules.
