uodate: Aisha has found a wonderful foster home! 🙌 I usually work with the Maxfund rescue group in Denver to help them find homes for senior dogs. But this month the dog I'm featuring is not a senior. She is a special needs dog with a very sad story, and she has been at the shelter an incredibly long time without any real interest. Aisha (blonde dog on the far left) is only about 5 years old. She was transferred from Saudi Arabia with a bullet lodged in her spine that can't be safely removed and has caused paralysis in her hind end. We're not exactly sure what kind of dog she is, but possibly a Saluki mix. You can see the hound resemblance when she turns to the side. She is very shy, it took about an half an hour before she became comfortable with me but then she was so, so sweet. She also comes to life around other dogs. Enoch worked his charm and she immediately became relaxed and playful. The wheelchair she has is all terrain and she has plenty of upper body strength to pull it over a variety of obstacles. She can pull herself around quite capably without the chair inside, but her adopter would need to be able to lift her in and out of the chair (she's between 40 and 50 pounds) and work with her on a schedule for potty training. She does physical therapy once a week in hopes that she will regain the ability to stand on her own. She is available for foster or adoption for the right home. This dog has been through so much. Its time for her to know the love and comfort and the safety of a real home. Maxfund is open every day but Tuesday. 1005 Galapego, Denver, CO. 303.595.4917 or email Kim at [email protected]

Explaining John Henry's name: When I was in 4th grade a new kid transferred to my elementary school named Ronnie. His family had a lot of money but that kind of thing doesn't set up barriers when you're only 10. We found out we had the same sense of humor and we quickly bonded. I wanted to call him after school to see about getting together that afternoon. My exact words were, "Hey do you have a phone?" His exact response was, "We have several." I thought it was an odd response for a 10 year old kid but I called him anyway and we became best friends for the next 40 plus years. At that time he had a little white pomeranian dog named John Henry. I always thought that was such a cool, strong name for a little, spunky dog. My friend Ronnie passed away from cancer almost 2 years ago and naming this rescue after his childhood dog felt like a nice way to think about him again, and at the same time honor Englebert, who will never truly leave my side. Englebert's name by the way, before I adopted him was Henry. It just all seems to fit. #whatsinaname Enoch and John Henry

I got the dogs together for a quick group shot with our newest member John Henry (2nd from the left) and it looks like he's going to be a poser, unlike Doris (far right) who was awake and looking around until she realized I was taking a picture, then she pretended to be asleep. She's ornery like that. I can tell by the smile on her face when the shot is over that she thinks it's funny. The fact that we were able to get several great shots of Doris for The One and Only Wolfgang book (new Barnes & Noble link in bio) is nothing short of a miracle. I give Bikini the pig a hard time about being a diva but Doris is no picnic to shoot either, and as far as she's concerned it's "mission accomplished". Also, Doris wears diapers most of the time and there is nothing she loves more than making it nearly impossible to put those on. It's like trying to put scotch tape on a wiggly fish. Somehow she can squeeze her hips in and simultaneously flail her back legs, snickering to herself the whole time. I have no idea why those things make me love her even more, but they do. #theoneandonlywolfgang
