What is antibody (serology) testing?

Covid-19 antibody tests, also known as serology tests, now are available in many labs across Montenegro. According to available data, one must pay from 17 to 25 euro to do it. Citizens of B&H, Kosovo and Albania can enter Montenegro with a negative serology test result.

CdM contacted the Public Health Institute and asked what serology tests are and about their main difference compared to PCR testing.

The Institute explained that serology tests aim to discover antibodies in people’s blood to Covid-19.

According to them, serology tests do not show whether a person is infected, but rather suggest whether someone was in contact with the virus and thus developed antibodies to it.

Contrary to them, PCR testing represents ‘a golden standard’ for diagnosing the coronavirus infection.

“This method detects the presence of the genetic material of the virus in the nose, throat and lower respiratory tract. Therefore, people who test positive by PCR are considered to have the virus, to be infectious and pose a potential danger to their environment,” the Institute told CdM.
