Oxford student’s populist measures put bakers to trouble, citizens to pay the price

Jakov Milatović

Flour and fuel prices are constantly rising. Bakers are in trouble. The main question is whether the price of bread will increase and how the citizens will withstand the increase in the price of basic foodstuffs.

By the decision of the Government of Montenegro, at the proposal of the Ministry of Economic Development, in July this year, the price of basic white bread weighing between 500 and 600 grams was limited to €0.50 per loaf, and for bread from 300 to 400 grams to €0.40 per loaf.

Due to rising flour and fuel prices on the world market, the burden of the cost of restrictions has fallen on the margins of bakers and retailers, which has become unsustainable for them recently. Bakers are largely negotiating with the Government, but so far, no concrete results have been achieved. Populist decisions of line ministries have brought this branch of the economy into trouble, while flour and fuel prices are rising.
