Monstat considering postponing population census, concerned about enumerators’ safety

Monstat Statistical Office is considering the decision to postpone the census of population, households and apartments, which was announced yesterday by PM-designate Milojko Spajic, said Monstat Deputy Director Snezana Remikovic.

She pointed out that current events regarding the census change from hour to hour.

Monstat is currently in the most unenviable position, because the existing decision of the Government is that the census will be from 1 to 15 November, she explained. The Directorate for Statistics would violate the law if it stopped activities related to the preparation of the census at this moment, she stressed. “With the announcement by PM-designate that the census will be postponed, that possible decision is being considered by Monstat and the next steps are being planned”, Remikovic said during the press conference of the Council of Less Numerous Peoples and National Communities.

Monstat is most concerned about the safety of people participating in the census, she said.

“Something happened last night that worried us. On 16 October, we sent a request to the Police Directorate for an assessment of the security of enumerators’ work, and on 23 October we repeated it because there was no reaction”, said Ramikovic.

Finance Minister Aleksandar Damjanovic said at today’s cabinet meeting that a problem occurred yesterday in the Ulcinj city hall when unauthorized persons obstructed the work of enumerators, instructors and the census commission in the building rented for their needs.
