Council of Europe for CdM: Good neighbourly relations important for accession process, Michel in contact with Milatovic and Spajic

Šarl Mišel

The President of the Council of Europe, Charles Michel, has postponed his scheduled visit to Montenegro on 2 & 3 July to a later date in order to ensure successful talks with key interlocutors in the country, who should not be overshadowed by the latest developments, CdM was told by the Council of Europe, i.e. Michel’s office, when asked why the visit was cancelled. It was emphasized that Michel was in contact with Montenegrin President and Prime Minister Jakov Milatovic and Milojko Spajic, respectively.

They recalled that Michel invited Milatovic to Brussels yesterday, and said that the EU’s position was that good neighbourly relations also remained an essential element of the accession process.

“Montenegro is a leader in the EU accession process and an important partner in the region. After the important Intergovernmental Conference of Montenegro and the European Union and the positive IBAR for Chapters 23 and 24, it is important to stay on the EU path in all aspects”, said Michel’s office.

It is added that the EU wants to see the country progress, and that focusing on EU-related reforms is important.

Last week, the Montenegrin Parliament adopted the Resolution on Genocide in the Jasenovac, Dachau and Mathhausen system of camps.

Instead of Michel coming to Podgorica on Tuesday as announced, Milatovic will go to Brussels tomorrow where the two of them will meet.
