At today’s Intergovernmental Conference held in Brussels, Montenegro closed five negotiating chapters. Those are: Chapter 3 – Right of Establishment and Freedom to Provide Services, Chapter 4 – Free Movement of Capital, Chapter 6 – Company Law, Chapter 11 – Agriculture and Rural Development and Chapter 13 – Fisheries, Danish Minister for European Affairs, Marie Bjerre, stated.
According to her, it represented a huge step forward for both Montenegro and the European Union (EU). She added that the EU recognized Montenegro’s political commitment and progress to date, and thanked all EU member states for their support.
“Today’s event marks a significant step forward for Montenegro and the European Union,” said EU Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, expressing gratitude to all EU member states for their support.
She sees today’s outcome as a sign of Montenegro’s substantial progress, noting that the country has never been closer to EU membership. According to her, the upcoming period will be crucial for further advancement in the negotiations.
However, she warns considerable work lies ahead, particularly concerning the rule of law.
“Montenegro needs focused and committed leadership, as well as national unity,” Ms Kos emphasizes, adding that the EU would continue to support Montenegro at every step, all the way to full membership.
