The Moracica bridge is one of the most demanding structures on the Bar-Boljare highway. It will be a bridge almost 1km long, it will run over the Moraca river valley and connect it with the opposite hill. The bridge will be carried by five pillars, the largest of which is to be 161 metre high!

CdM crew had visited the construction site and seen that four support pillars have been half-completed, whereas the works on the fifth one have just been started. The highest pillar has already reached 75m height. By the end of the year, the pillars are supposed to be finished and works on the part of the bridge on which vehicles will move will begin.

“This size project is being implemented for the first time in the region. And this section is more demanding than any highway that was built in Europe,” said Dusko Rondovic, an engineer in charge of the highway section 1.

He pointed out that the construction of this section was challenging and demanding both in terms of engineering and construction.

“Most Moracica is one of the most important and largest structures on the Smokovac-Uvac-Matesevo highway priority section. Most will be supported by five pillars and two abutments. The bridge will be about 960 metres long and 24 metres wide. The highest pillar will be 161 metres high. After placing the pavement, the bridge will be 175 metres high,” explained Rondovic.

The bridge will be magnificent.
“There have been no such projects in the region. This will be the highest bridge in the former Yugoslavia. When it comes to complexity, this is certainly the most challenging highway section in Europe,” said Rondovic.

About 150 people, mostly Chinese, are engaged on the bridge Moracica.
“We have about 20 workers per a pillar… at this stage about 150 people are being engaged. They are mostly Chinese workers. There are about 30-40 Montenegrins working as assistants,” said Rondovic.

After a CdM journalist remarked that “we would not be able to do this without the Chineses’ technical assistance”, Rondovic underscored that we would certainly be able to do that.

“But this is an expensive project and the best way is to do it together with the help of those who have a lot of experience in these endeavours,” said Rondovic.
