Serbian foreign minister Ivica Dacic said that the message heard at yesterday’s US – Adriatic Charter Summit in Podgorica that Montenegro was a leader in the region was exaggerated.
“We respect Montenegro as a state, but there is a great deal of exaggeration when saying that the country plays a leading role in defending stability and security in the region. If so, let it solve the problems of stability and security,” Dacic told RTRS TV.
In his view, this year’s summit has been raised at the level of heads of state and government because of Montenegro.
Dacic said that terms from the time of the Iron Curtain were heard in Podgorica, citing the division into the East and the West.
“What is the West when the Berlin Wall fell? Where is the East? There is no communist East. There is a Russian issue and everything is seen through the attitude towards Russia,” Dacic said.
According to Dacic, the division into the East and the West is coming back and countries are being pressed to choose a side once again. Dacic said that Serbia would not participate in it.
“Serbia opts for itself and not for the East or the West,” said Serbian foreign minister.
Noting that the Adriatic Charter is an association of NATO aspirants, Dacic assessed that this organisation is fading away, because three of the five countries have already become the alliance members, Beta news agency reports.
Dacic added that Serbia, which has observer status, “participated in the charter in a relaxed way” because it wanted to be neither a NATO member nor a member of some other bloc.
