The number of smokers in Montenegro grew by 4.5 per cent compared to five years ago. When it comes to young people, women are the leading in the consumption of tobacco products in relation to men, according to a survey conducted last year by the Institute of Public Health.
There was an increase in the proportion of population aged 15 to 64 who smoke from 31% in 2012 to 35.4% in 2017. When data on the number of smokers are compared to official population figures, it turns out that more than 220,000 citizens of Montenegro are addicted to nicotine.
The proportion of young male smokers is particularly high and it amounts to about 11 per cent among 15-year-olds, which is double than shown in the previous research conducted by the Institute of Public Health.
The largest number of smokers consumes between 10 and 20 cigarettes a day, but nearly one in three smokers consumes more than 20 cigarettes a day.
