He has said that over the past few years, Montenegro has continuously faced with an increased number of asylum seekers from Asia and North Africa.
In an interview to the Public Broadcasting Service, Mr Rascanin has said that in the first five months of this year the number of submitted request for asylum in Montenegro was around 250 requests per month.
“In the past two months it has significantly dropped, so we had only four requests in June and three requests in July,” he has said.
Mr Rascanin has pointed out that the Montenegrin asylum system has been prepared to function with a small number of asylum seekers.
“In ordinary circumstances, Montenegro has accommodation capacities for 65 persons. It seems to us that Montenegro has so far been able to deal with increased number of asylum seekers when faced with such issues,” he said, adding that Montenegro’s capacities have been enough to respond to the influx of immigrants.
“There is no reason to doubt that it will be the same in the future, if such a situation occurs”, he said, adding that we do not know how the situation might unfold.
