Montenegro close to getting NATO invitation

The main political advisor to the Prime Minister, Milan Rocen, the MP and the leader of the Positive Montenegro, Darko Pajovic, and the Ambassador of Germany, Gudrun Elisabeth Steinacker, talked about the importance of the Alliance in the context of modern processes, as well as about the benefits for Montenegro and further activities before the December decision on the invitation for membership.

At the meeting, they expressed satisfaction because representatives of both the Government and opposition were brought together around this topic of strategic importance for the future of Montenegro, and because an open dialogue on these issues was being conducted in the interest of all its citizens.

It was stressed that the recent telephone conversation of the U.S. Vice President, Joseph Biden, and the Prime Minister, Milo Djukanovic, represented an incentive to fulfil the remaining obligations and encouragement ahead of the expected invitation to Montenegro.

“Membership in the Alliance represents the best security framework for maintaining peace and multiethnic harmony, for economic growth and development, for building a society of the rule of law and effective institutions, and for contributing regional stability and, consequently, the European and global security,” it was a unique message from the meeting.

Ms Steinacker mentioned the recent visit of the envoy of the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ernest Reichel, to the Western Balkans, Turkey and the EFTA countries, who expressed the full support of Germany to European and Euro-Atlantic integration of Montenegro and the Western Balkans during the meeting with representatives of the Government and the opposition, and stressed the importance of the upcoming visit of the NAC, led by NATO Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg.

Rocen, Pajovic and Steinacker were also answering numerous questions about the economic interest of Montenegro to join NATO, the impact on the development of tourism, the neutrality option, risk of terrorism, the way of decision-making within the Alliance, relations with Serbia and Russia…
