More than 350 flamingos at Solana saltworks

During regular monitoring at Ulcinj Solana saltworks, employees in the National Parks registered that there have been over 350 flamingos staying in this area these days, the public enterprise stated.

As it added, the figure is significantly higher than the one registered in early March, when there were about 80 flamingos at the Solana.

“The spring migration is a unique natural phenomenon. During these days, bird lovers can see at the Solana flocks of several thousand birds – ducks, wading birds, swallows, etc.,” National Parks said in its statement.

In order to provide favourable conditions for the birds in terms of food and possibly nesting at the Solana, the public enterprise maintains the water level in the pools No 18 and 19, bearing in mind that flamingos started to nest in these places last year.

“On 20 March, Djerane pump facility was put on trial run and it was noted that it was ready for pumping salt water in Solana area,” the NP said.

According to the company, cleaning of the saltworks channel was also finished so that the water can freely run from Djerane to the Solana.

On this occasion, NP called on citizens not to throw waste in this channel and not to discharge waste waters there in order for the company to efficiently manage water in this area.

The National Parks of Montenegro has managed Ulcinj Solana for the second consecutive year, its contract on one-year lease of the entire saltworks’ property was extended in August last year.
