Abazovic: Whoever is against DPS should be for NATO

By joining the Alliance, he believes, DPS will lose their main argument for gaining international support.

“Then, they will have to address specific matters related to EU accession, particularly those in chapters 23 and 24, which do not suit them. Situation in opposition will also be changed by entering the Alliance, because that question, which now devides us, will be resolved”, said Abazovic for Pobjeda daily.

He finds that planning of anti-NATO coalition by some opposition parties will only go in favor of the DPS, which, he claims, only profits from the solid bloc division, which aims to divide Montenegrin society.

“The Assembly has so far avoided this topic, which has caused much controversy and vigorous discussion. This strategy, in my opinion, was wrong. Specifically, for the sake of primarily domestic public, and then because of our international partners, it is clear that Parliament must deal with all relevant issues, even when they are tricky. So it’s good that we heard various arguments “in favor” and “against”, thus helping subdue tensions over the issue. Montenegro is troubled by more complicated internal problems, the most important of which is the issue of the rule of law. So it was important that it be mentioned in the resolution as well”, he said.

His thesis is that the government will more easily be removed if Montenegro becomes a member of NATO. When asked why he thought so, Abazovic said that logic is very simple.

“DPS has always survived in government by maintaining political spectacle and creating the atmosphere of “life or death”, placing before the people some great historical question. In this way they mobilize their voters (except those votes that they are buying), and gain international support. If we become a member of NATO, their current main argument for buying international support will disappear..”, he said adding that not everyone in the international community is glad for having to support the last semi-authoritarian system in Europe.

After joining the Alliance, this will disappear completely, and with it, this rotten, twenty-five-year rule”, Abazovic said among other things.
