In Montenegro, in the period from 2017 to 2022, a total of 2,859 intentional abortions were performed, while the number of newborns decreased in the same period, according to data submitted by the Institute of Public Health to the Gradski portal. The Institute’s report points out that a total of 2,141 unintended abortions were performed in that period. According to data from the Institute, in that period there were a total of 5,000 abortions in Montenegro.
The largest number of intentional terminations of pregnancy was recorded in 2017 and 2022 – 637 and 604 procedures, respectively. The Institute also states that the number of live births decreased from 7,432 in 2017 to 7,021 in 2022.
The Institute believes that the introduction of additional education is very important for reducing the frequency, as well as the consequences of abortion on the physical and psychological health of a young person.
It adds that it is significant to include peer educators in the context of education about the reproductive health of young people, because they positively encourage the exchange of knowledge about health information, values and behaviours.
