Belgrade journalist on the ‘stale’ opposition in Montenegro

Boško Jakšić

Looking to weigh in on the forthcoming presidential elections in Montenegro, political commentator and renowned Belgrade journalist Boško Jakšić, told Dnevne Novine daily he believes opposition is only looking to cause local and regional disorders, but without fresh ideas.

Mr. Jaksic says he sees presidential candidate Milo Djukanovic as a politician whose career can only be dreamt of by many politicians of the region, but nonetheless stresses the importance of the outcome of the forthcoming elections for the entire Western Balkans.

Regardless of the ceremonial limitation of the president’s function, he says, it is extremely important who will be at the helm of the state. Mr. Jaksic also said that in his view, there are no major uncertainties in the victory of Mr. Djukanovic, most likely in the first round, and this short and completely predictable campaign can only be remembered by a large number of candidates – for the first time including a woman.

“Everything else is ready-made, the ruling DPS had no reason to change a scheme that has been successful for over a quarter of a century. The opposition on the other hand had all the reasons for offering something new, but it suffers from the “Serbian syndrome” of division. So Djukanovic is once again helped and propelled by those who complain they cannot take him down. There are some new faces in the opposition, but no fresh ideas”, Jaksic concluded with apparent enthusiasm for his team.
