Bodnar: NATO membership weakens Russian influence

NATO does not represent just a military alliance, but the state’s choice for development, whereas Russia, on the other side, scrambles to prevent our close relations with this organization. This is why Montenegro’s experience is of crucial importance for us, said deputy foreign minister of Ukraine Vasyl Bodnar, in an interview for Pobjeda daily.

He added that Ukraine needs Montenegro’s support, esp. in light of the Russia’s previous attempts to prevent Montenegro’s NATO membership.

“I’m convinced that Russia’s influence will decrease after the country joins NATO. Russia plotted the election day coup and tried to overthrow Montenegro’s government and I hope that would be the worst thing ever to happen to your country,” Bodnar said when commenting on Russia’s influence.

NATO membership represents a significant experience for every country that becomes a member state, particularly for new member states, such as Montenegro is, according to Bodnar. “This has been important to us in terms of internal security, as you know we’re the target of Russian aggression,” explained Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister.
