A bomb thrown at US Embassy in Podgorica: Attacker blew himself up

An unknown man threw a bomb at the Embassy of the United States of America in Podgorica at about midnight and then blew himself up.

The Police Directorate earlier said  that the attacker had had two hand grenades – he threw one at the embassy and made suicide with another one.

Special police unit is guarding the US Embassy building. The autopsy of the attacker has been finished.

Interior minister Mevludin Nuhodzic and the head of Police Directorate Slavko Stojanovic met the US ambassador to Montenegro Margaret Ann Uyehara at 10am.

The attacker threw the explosive device over the Embassy’s fence. No one in the Embassy was hurt and the building itself sustained no damage.

The police blocked the Boulevard of Revolution from the National Security Agency headquarters to the US Embassy building.

On the occasion of the incident, the Government commented on its official social media channels.

The motive of the attack has been unknown for the time being.

After the blast, the US Embassy in Podgorica advised US citizens to avoid the embassy until further notice.

Among the actions to take, the embassy suggested avoiding the area around the US Embassy, monitoring local media for updates, avoiding large gatherings and demonstrations and following the instructions of local authorities.

At the same time, the embassy stated that all visa services at the embassy were cancelled for today. “Interviews will be rescheduled as soon as possible. American Citizen Services will be available today on an emergency basis,” the embassy announced.
