MP Code of Ethics needs to be changed in order to adequately punish inappropriate behaviour in Parliament, Speaker of Parliament Ivan Brajovic said.
During the Parliament session, he said that nobody feels good remembering vandalism scenes from the end of the last extraordinary Parliament session.
Brajovic said that the MP Code of Ethics recognised inappropriate behaviour, but the punishment for that was “minor and ridiculous if we are faced with incidents such as those seen at the last session”.
According to him, the code should be changed in terms of introducing rigid measures for its violation.
“We should change the Code of Ethics when Parliament is in full composition. It was really inappropriate behaviour, for which the code does not stipulate sanctions,” said Brajovic.
DPS MP Milorad Vuletic said that insults in the Parliament hall and “assaults” against MPs deserve more attention.
“I just ask you as Parliament Speaker to tell me whether we are going to suffer humiliation here, which began three years ago and has not been finished yet, but become more intense instead. And whether we are going to pay attention to statements of some individuals, unfortunately, our colleagues, in which they promise to be even more aggressive in attacks against members of this caucus or coalition,” Vuletic said.
He asked Brajovic about the mechanisms for protecting MPs to be able to do their job properly and in accordance with law and the Rules of Procedure.
“If you cannot explain that to me, then let the public not be surprised because of this caucus’ possible ugly response. I will not allow anyone to insult me, either on personal, dignity or integrity levels, as well as me as an MP,” said Vuletic.
He said that some opposition MPs showed arrogance, frivolity and vulgarity, which have been tolerated.
Brajovic said that he and the Parliament Speaker’s Collegium condemned such behaviour man times.
“That behaviour will be ended. That means we will eliminate possibility of uncivilised acts. Inappropriate behaviour will not be tolerated any longer,” said Brajovic.
