There’s no reason that the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Montenegro delays the decision-making on revoking the Montenegrin citizenship to the Leader of the Europe Now Movement, Milojko Spajic, because he possesses the Serbian citizenship and everything’s clear here. This case should be the top priority for the ministry. In addition, the State Election Commission, DIK, should consider his presidential candidacy seriously, the leading Montenegrin expert for citizenship issues, Bojan Bugarin, says in a statement for the CdM portal.
After it was revealed that Milojko Spajic possessed the Serbian citizenship apart from the Montenegrin, he submitted a request for renouncing the Serbian citizenship.
Mr Bulgarian explains for CdM that it’s a comprehensive procedure and might last long. “It also depends on the Serbian MUP, the political momentum, and maybe the political decision from Serbia’s government – whether they’re going to “save” Spajic or not. Anyway, there are certain requirements that Spajic needs to meet in order to renounce his Serbian citizenship. He said that he had submitted a request for renouncing but that means nothing for the Montenegrin side of the story,” he explains.
According to him, if Serbia responds to his request quickly and revokes his citizenship, the Montenegrin MUP won’t be able to do anything, as he cannot be left without both citizenships. “And vice versa. Therefore, if the Montenegrin MUP revokes his MNE citizenship, then the Serbian MUP won’t be able to act in line with his request and revoke it”.
However, Mr Bugarin points out that the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Montenegro is obliged to implement the Law on Montenegrin Citizenship.
