A boycott of the Voli supermarket chain started yesterday, on the initiative of Alternativa Crna Gora (eng. Alternative Montenegro) and is going to last until 23 February. While business associations urged them to give up on that idea, Alternativa Crna Gora didn’t want to change the opinion, noting they made such a decision based on the people’s opinion, Pobjeda daily reports.
According to data from the www.cijene.me website, currently counting 143 products with prices from several supermarket chains, Voli is either the cheapest or among the cheapest in several categories of products. However, it’s worth mentioning that not all prices were timely updated.
Following last week’s panel at the Faculty of Economy, when the Deputy Prime Minister and Economic Development Minister, Nik Gjeloshaj, among other things, said that the boycott would not bring anything good, Alternativa Crna Gora reacted, telling they didn’t target anyone and other chains would be boycotted as well. They also said they could not wait to see whether he (Mr Gjeloshaj) would defend other supermarket chains like he defended Voli. Alternativa Crna Gora also added they would call for the boycott of imported products and the “owners of supermarkets who take the money out from our country”.
Although food prices are constantly on the rise apart from several campaigns of the government, tensions have run high lately because Alternativa called for the boycott of the supermarket chains on two occasions.
