According to official data, there are 4.659 officials in Montenegro. When compared to the population, it’s one public official per 132 citizens. Interlocutors of Dan daily indicate that it’s a huge number for Montenegro, having in mind it’s a small country and its economic circumstances, suggesting a more rational public administration.

“Montenegro needs rational public administration and the optimal number of civil servants and public officials. The new government promised rationalization, but the number of employees has increased,” Mr Milan Radovic of the NGO Civic Alliance, said.

Mr Vesko Pejak of the ‘Alternativa Montenegro’ organization also agrees that the number of public officials is high. Professor Djordjije Blazic is adamant – over 4.500 public officials is a huge problem for Montenegro, while a trade unionist, Mr Veselin Vujanovic, notes that citizens tolerate it all, adding that Montenegro is a leader in Europe when it comes to the number of political parties.
