In only six months, the Customs Administration has confiscated smuggled cigarettes which are worth almost half a million EUR. The most smuggling of cigarettes and other excise products was registered at the most frequent border crossings.
The government suggested that the excise on tobacco be imposed again in September, since the legal selling dropped by 35%.
The representatives of the Customs Administration say that they identified smuggling of tobacco and other excise products as one of the important risks for the emergence of grey market and, therefore, they drew attention of their control to this domain.
However, seems like the country is losing the battle with the smugglers. Member of the Socialist Democratic Party, Raško Konjević, said that imposing excises again would mean capitulation of the country to the grey market.
