Cyber-attack planned for a long time and in detail

Minister of Public Administration Maras Dukaj has stated that since 20 August, Montenegro has been exposed to the biggest attack on the information system, and that the attack is still going on. He has added that Montenegro currently has great support from its partners. Head of the Information Security Directorate, Dusan Polovic, has disclosed that 150 stations in 10 state institutions have been infected by these cyber-attacks. He says that the value of the virus that attacked the Government’s IT system is worth from $100,000 to $2.5m.

“We have never encountered something like this before. We have tremendous support from our partners. First of all, I would like to thank the USA, Britain and France”, he has said at today’s press conference.

According to him, Montenegro has not invested in information security in recent years.

We must learn a lesson from this, says Dukaj.

“More investment must be made in the cyber security system, because cyber terrorism is one of the main threats of the modern world. Due to the timely reaction of public administration officials, more severe consequences have been prevented. The most important thing is that no lasting damage has been caused to the key system of state administration”, says Dukaj.

He has reiterated that personal data of citizens have been preserved.
