Darmanovic: Integration for security in the region

Montenegro has significantly advanced in the negotiations with the European Union (EU) and accession to NATO will contribute to national and regional security framework, said Minister of Foreign Affairs of Montenegro Srdjan Darmanovic.

He participated in the 127th Council of Europe Ministerial Session held in Nicosia.

In his speech, Darmanovic called in mind that the tenth anniversary of Montenegro’s membership in the Council of Europe (CoE) was marked this year, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated.

He said that Montenegro would strive to contribute to further promotion of the Council, as a responsible and constructive member.

Darmanovic added that regional stability of the Western Balkans depended largely on the national commitment to the further development and continuation of EU enlargement.

“Montenegro has made a significant progress in the negotiations with the EU. Its NATO accession will contribute to national and regional security framework. The commitment to EU accession of the Western Balkans is to maintain the stability of the region taking into account common regional consensus on this issue,” said Darmanovic.

Speaking on the fight against terrorism, Darmanovic reiterated that Montenegro would continue to support all efforts against all forms of terrorism in Europe and the world, respecting human rights and the rule of law.

“We have to fight to eradicate the sources of terrorism through curbing radicalisation that leads to terrorism, the fight against violent extremism, as well as the prevention of foreign fighters’ terrorist activities,” said Darmanovic.
