Foreign minister Srdjan Darmanovic sees nothing controversial in the fact that US Ambassador Margaret Ann Uyehara congratulated DPS on the result it achieved at the recently held local elections. He says there was no reason to send a protest note the US Embassy.
Darmanovic responded to the question of DF MP Jovan Vucurovic who asked the minister how many times the US Ambassador Margaret Ann Uyehara was warned not to interfere with the internal affairs of Montenegro, which, as he put it, she was continuously doing.
“She recently congratulated DPS on local elections. Any decent government would at least respond. The US Embassy congratulates the DPS on stealing the elections, although its representatives are constantly speaking about electoral legislation. By this act, she offended opposition voters,” Vucurovic said.
Darmanovic said there was no reason for the protest note.
“It’s not unusual to congratulate on elections in the country, nor to comment on processes in third countries. It is a matter of one’s impression whether it is appropriate, but it was not for any kind of protest notes,” said Darmanovic.
Minister Darmanovic also responded to DF MP Milun Zogovic’s question who asked him what he had based his statement on when he had said that Russia’s meddling in elections in Montenegro was possible.
Darmanovic said that Russia’s interference in the electoral processes of other countries was a topical issue.
“Bearing in mind everything that was happening in October last year, the reasonable reaction of each state is to exercise caution when it comes to any upcoming elections. We hope that this time something like that won’t happen again, which would be an encouraging signal,” said Darmanovic.
