Darmanovic: USA will be more present in Western Balkans as of 2018

Darmanović

The USA is aware of the changes in geopolitical circumstances and that there is serious competition for the Balkan region. Therefore, I expect the USA to dedicate more attention to Western Balkans as of next year, the minister of foreign affairs Srdjan Darmanovic told Pobjeda.

Minister Darmanovic also talked about the new US strategy for the Balkans, recently presented by the US Atlantic Council. He said that the document would reflect greater US commitment in the region.

He also said he expected Montenegro to become an EU member before 2025.

“I believe that having in mind the advance compared with the rest of candidates, the accession to the EU must be completed before 2025,” Darmanovic said.

When it comes to the border issues, Darmanovic said that it was in the interest of Croatia to have Montenegro in the EU, so that the Prevlaka issue would be solved by an agreement. He reiterated that the demarcation agreement with Kosovo was a done deal for Montenegro.

The minister said he would be glad if Russia refrained from meddling in the upcoming elections in Montenegro, but added that there were minimum chances for that.
