Democratic Front (DF) officially gave up on its initiative to organise the “popular referendum” on Montenegro’s NATO membership on its own, Pobjeda newspaper.
DF presidency’s member Milan Knezevic told Pobjeda that “an alternative referendum” should be organised by Demos, Democratic Montenegro (DCG) and Socialist People’s Party (SNP), apart from DF.
“DF considers that a decision on possible Montenegro’s membership in NATO should be made only in a referendum. At this point, no one knows whether the US Senate will ratify the Protocol, so that every speculation on further moves either of opponents or proponents of NATO membership is relative. However, if the current parliamentary majority decides to make this decision in Parliament, then DF, Democrats, Demos and SNP, ie the parties advocating a referendum on NATO, should organise an alternative referendum, as a clear indication that the majority of citizens are against joining the military alliance,” Knezevic said.
At the celebration of Julian New Year, DF presented its position that the political group itself should organise “alternative referendum” if the government refused to call a national referendum.
Experts and government representative assessed such a request as anti-constitutional.
