“Svetozar Marovic is a man whom contributed to contemporary political achievements of Montenegro by his deep commitment in the political life of Montenegro, starting with the restoration of independence up to democratic development crowned with NATO invitation. That is why I decided to show, not only political, but also a friendly support to a person with whom I worked very responsibly in political affairs in previous years”, Djukanovic said.
According to him, Marovic’s arrest confirmed that the state is operating and that its institutions conduct their work as provided in the Constitution and the law.
“That confirms that the competent authorities show suspicion related to a number of activities in which they believe Svetozar Marovic participated in and that suspicion of a number of leaders of political parties in Montenegro that there is a selective justice in Montenegro was groundless”, PM said when asked to comment on the arrest of one of his longtime associates.
He stressed that there is no selective justice in Montenegro.
“We are all individually accessible to the constitutional and judicial system of the country and we are all obliged to deal with that circumstance and try to prove with arguments that the suspicions are groundless,” he added.
Djukanovic wished Marovic all the best with proving his innocence and offering arguments that will, as he said, help him to deny the allegations contained in the lawsuit the investigation has been based on.
“A process in which everyone will have their chances has just started,” said Djukanovic.
The PM also called for respect for the presumption of innocence.
“We need to show more humanity than contemporary Montenegrin society unfortunately shows,” he said.
Speculations that during the process against him, Marovic could speak about some suspicious activities in which Djukanovic and his family were involved, PM called nonsense and said he was not afraid of the same fate.
“I invited everybody to be human, professional and dignified and not to speculate. I consider myself a serious man. All those speculations must not be the subject of a serious conversation. Let me mock the possibility that we should be afraid that it could happen to us after a case was launched against any individual. It cannot happen to us if we comply with the laws,” Djukanovic added.
Responding to a question whether he would perform prime minister’s duties at this time next year, he said “a lot further than that”.
