“With its overall development on the European and Euro-Atlantic track, Montenegro has proven that it has the internal capacity to successfully implement reforms and to join the family of European and Euro-Atlantic nations and states. Unfortunately, we cannot help but notice the stagnation during the last four years”, former President of Montenegro Milo Djukanovic has stated at the 2BS Forum in Budva.
“These four years have brought to Montenegro a serious ruin of those fragile achievements that we achieved between 2006 and 2020. And that of all, first of all on the security front, but also on the economic front, on the front of public finances, education, healthcare… Montenegro has lost the key assumption of what qualified it as a country of leaders and a leader in this region, which is exemplary political stability”, Djukanovic has said.
As he adds, we have the door open again for the enlargement process.
“If that door remains open, then there is no doubt that Montenegro is ahead of the other countries of the Western Balkans in terms of qualifications for membership in the EU… It should be taken into account that no one can do their homework until we do. There is potential in Montenegrin society, but that potential requires serious state-political management, which Montenegro does not have in this period”, Djukanovic has emphasized.
He has said, among other things, that there is no doubt that Serbia has the potential to be on the European and Euro-Atlantic side.
“I think that state policy, which has recently been dominantly characterized by the ideology of Greater Serbian nationalism, is problematic. As long as Greater Serbian nationalism is outside the institutions of state politics, it is a problem, but not a dramatic one. When it becomes a state policy, it is dangerous and threatening the peace and stability of the region”, he has stressed.
The interest of the region is stability and the Greater Serbian policy, which was allowed by the international community, has threatened the sovereignty of neighbouring countries, DJukanovic has pointed out.
