DPS: First NATO invitation, then we will accept any date for elections

The DPS Main Board also strongly condemned, as they put “undemocratic protests organised by the Democratic Front (DF), which were followed by violent attempt to occupy institutions of the system and an attempt to undo the electoral will of the citizens.

“The Main Board affirmed the expressed democratic maturity of the Montenegrin society, as well as the institutional capacity of the system to fully protect the achievements of democratic development of Montenegro, starting from independence, stability and constitutionally guaranteed rights and freedoms of all citizens,” the Board communicated.

The strongest party in Montenegro welcomed the responsibility and accountability of the law enforcement forces of Montenegro. As they added, the party expected other competent state authorities to act responsibly and promptly investigate all elements of the attempts of violent change of the constitutional order.

“The Democratic Party of Socialists believes that getting NATO invitation remains the absolute priority of the state policy and calls upon all other political and social actors who share this view to give their full contribution to its fulfilment. Starting from the fact that this is the last year of the current mandate of the Parliament and the Government of Montenegro, the DPS is ready, after we receive NATO invitation, to accept any dates for holding general elections, which would represent an expression of the widest possible parliamentary consensus”, the DPS stated.

He emphasised that the DPS expressed its full readiness to search for a political solution to overcome the current situation only within the institutions of Montenegro.

“Although all the previous electoral processes in Montenegro, through the monitoring of all relevant international organisations, were accessed as successful, fair and democratic which reflect freely expressed will of the people, certain political structures still doubt their regularity. As the most responsible and the most powerful factor in the Montenegrin political society, the DPS is ready to conduct a broad dialogue, which will lead to a higher degree of trust among all election participants in outcomes of future electoral processes”, the DPS pointed out.

At today’s session, in accordance with the statutory obligation, the DPS Main Board considered the results of implementation of the electoral programme of the party in 2015 and concluded that this work was carried out at a good pace.

“The facts that our society has been only a few weeks away from the expected invitation for full membership in NATO and that 20 negotiation chapters with the European Union have been opened prove success of the Government’s policy. In addition, the economic growth of over 4%, beginning of implementation of the largest infrastructure project in the history of Montenegro – the Bar-Boljare highway, a high probability of beginning of the Thermal Power Plant second block construction, the efficient construction of tourist facilities on the coast, make a good foundation for a dynamic continuing economic development and increasing quality of life of all citizens of Montenegro”, the DPS added.

In addition, the Main Board endorsed the strategy that includes the reform of the pension system, as well as better regulation of the labour market, which should ultimately contribute to greater employment in Montenegro.

“It was concluded that all entities that deal with social protection and care for vulnerable groups in society must have additional sensitivity to those in need, particularly in times of economic crises that inevitably shook Montenegro, like all other countries,” the DPS concluded.
