Drljević: We expect opening of Chapter 8

Dynamic of the fulfillment of tasks from the negotiation process is not suffering, despite restrictions in the organization of work in Montenegro and EU Member States, said chief EU negotiator, Mr Aleksandar Drljević.

He reminded that Chapter 8 – Competition – was the only chapter left to be closed in Montenegro’s negotiation process with the EU.

“We have been given all green lights and we keep getting information about green lights for opening this chapter too. I firmly believe the positive attitude towards enlargement policy will continue”, Mr Drljević said.

He thinks that March decision on opening negotiation talks with Albania and North Macedonia was indicator that the EU was ready to adopt strategic decisions relevant to the enlargement.

Mr Drljević said that EU Summit was very important although talks will be limited due to video format.

“I am sure the new challenge has tied EU even more. The EU itself shows that enlargement policy has no alternative. Only jointly can we respond to this challenge. I firmly believe that the result of the victory will be full WB integration”, Mr Drljević said.

The EU has managed to bring everything under control very shortly after the outbreak.

Mr Drljević reminded that the EU had supported Montenegro with €53 million in the first wave.

“In addition, Montenegro can count on €60 million from the Macro-Financial EU support. The funds will be available in the form of grants for 12 months and will help Montenegro cover immediate and urgent financial needs and mitigate negative social and economic consequences of the pandemic”, Mr Drljević said.

According to Mr Drljević, EC has demonstrated solidarity by deciding to approve of the initiative launched by heads of diplomacies of WB countries referring to the exemption of our country from the restrictions on the export of medical products for personal use.

“Montenegro has reliable partner in the EU and its support is very important and very obvious”, Mr Drljević said.
