Đukanović: Pride parade will be an important step forward in the affirmation of LGBT persons

Montenegro shares the vision of the UN when it comes to the introduction of new standards proclaimed by the official UN policy, said the President of Montenegro, Milo Đukanović, on the occasion of the celebration of the United Nations Day. He pointed out that Pride Parade, scheduled for 17 November in Podgorica, will be a new important step towards the affirmation of LGBT persons.

“Numerous projects we’ve implemented contribute to the further democratization, economic and social development, and better life of our citizens. Dynamics of development and improvement has been maintained in many areas, and, at the same time, we are trying to take some steps in those areas which lack systemic approach”, said Đukanović.

He reminded that cooperation between Montenegro and UN lasts much longer than its full membership.

“Traces of first communications date back to the formation of the League of Nations. We have always had understanding for each other and we knew that everything we do together must be in order to make progress and democratization of the society”, said Đukanović.

He said that Montenegro would remain reliable UN partner that promotes its policies in all areas.

“More precisely, in the area of human rights, our objective is not only to guarantee their protection, but also to promote them actively, and meet our international responsibilities. Montenegro is one of only 30 or so UN Member States which reports regularly on the implementation of key conventions from the domain of human rights. We are an example of positive practice in the implementation of review mechanisms. Montenegro strongly supports reform processes aimed at strengthening efficiency and effectiveness of the UN”, said Đukanović.
