Đukanović’s a true regional leader, reckons Janjić

Dušan Janjić

Political observer from Belgrade Dušan Janjić sees Montenegro’s head of state Milo Đukanović as high-ranking European Union’s (EU) official, after his term of office expires, as Đukanović’s already been a regional leader.

“Montenegro is lucky to have him as he managed to end the coalition with Slobodan Milošević and since then worked hard to restore Montenegro’s independence,” highlighted Janjić in an interview for weekend edition of Dnevne Novine daily.

Janjić also commented on the recently held presidential and local elections in MNE and said that he was not surprised with the outcome, as now it’s clear Montenegro has been continuously struggling to make some new political order. “Election outcomes were expected as the local ones took place immediately after the presidential. Elections were not based on general and national issues, which was actually good as it showed the Montenegrin political scene has become serious,” reckons Janjić.

As for the opposition, it has to recruit new human resources and change its political communication. “The opposition’s model of behavior needs to change, as it has been changing in whole Europe, and Montenegro has seriously entered Europe when joined NATO,” said he.

According to him, Djukanovic’s future is in the EU. “I’m sure he’s going to be a high-ranking EU official or maybe even in NATO. He developed a system in Montenegro and he’s a serious politician. Montenegro is lucky to have him as there were many issues to be addressed over the years. Djukanovic’s a true regional leader and it’s evident he has a significant position in Europe’s organization,” added Janjić.

“When it comes to Milo Đukanović, I can’t imagine what would happen if he decides to withdraw, as previously speculated. I cannot imagine he would rather play basketball or go fishing than be in politics, if you know what I mean.”
