Economic citizenship programme: 664 people received Montenegrin passports, 228 requests rejected

The Ministry of Internal Affairs granted 664 Montenegrin passports as part of the economic citizenship programme – 77 are in the procedure, while 228 requests were rejected, it was published in the Government Information on the State of the Special Investment Programme of Special Importance for the Economic Interest of Montenegro on 31 May 2024.

According to the data from the Agency for Investments, during the Special Investment Programme of Special Importance for the Economic Interest of Montenegro (economic citizenship) inclusive of 31 December 2022, a total of 1,113 requests for the acquisition of Montenegrin citizenship by admission, i.e. applications, were submitted. Applications are currently in various stages of processing, depending on the date of submission.

In 2018, the Government of Montenegro passed a decision on the criteria, method and procedure for selecting persons who can acquire Montenegrin citizenship.

As defined then, during the special programme, decisions on admission to Montenegrin citizenship could be made for a maximum of 2,000 requests.
