Wildfires have been raging across Montenegro for five days, with firefighters, the military, international teams, and locals battling large fires near Podgorica and Tuzi. Difficult terrain is hindering firefighting efforts.

The government declared 14 August 2025, a day of mourning in honour of a soldier, Dejan Božović, who tragically lost his life fighting the blaze.

Fires have been especially severe in areas like Gornje and Donje Mrke, Petrovići, Dinoša, and Piperi. International aid includes helicopters and water bombers from Serbia, Hungary, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Italy, Austria, and Switzerland.

Two firefighters were injured recently.

Authorities arrested a suspect in connection with one fire near Bijelo Polje.

Local residents received firefighting backpacks and training to aid in the efforts. Humanitarian help can be offered via SMS donations to support affected families.
