Montenegro nationals in Germany will be able to get a German citizenship and at the same time keep the Montenegrin, in line with the new law the Federal Government of the Federal Republic of Germany passed on Wednesday.
The Federal Government adopted the draft law proposed by the coalition (Alliance of the Social Democrats, Green Party and Free Democrats) that wish the reform of citizenship legislation. The aim is to shorten the waiting time to the minimum and enable dual citizenship, stated the president of the eMDe Alliance – the Association of Montenegrin Associations to Germany, Emira M Licina.
“The coalition wished the reform of the citizenship law. Draft law, adopted by the Federal Government on Wednesday, envisages the facilitation of naturalization and generally enables dual citizenship. On the other hand, the government wants to make naturalization harder for those can’t earn on their own or who have already committed crimes in Germany,” Ms Licina explained.
According to her, people who have been living in Germany for a while, from now on will be able to file a request for obtaining the German passport after only five years. Until now, the procedure lasted eight years.
