Ambassador Gordan Stojovic stressed the importance of opening an honorary consulate in the country with the economic system very similar to Montenegro’s, a solid ground for strengthening economic ties and a large diaspora.
He pointed out long tradition of relations between the two countries dating back to the second half of the 19th century, when the Captain Jovan Vukasovic, together with many other emigrants from Montenegro, participated in setting up the first Uruguayan fleet, construction of ships and establishment of direct shipping lines.
An inaugural assembly of the Montenegrin Community of the Eastern Republic of Uruguay was also held in Montevideo, on June 12th.
Emigrants from Montenegro have a long tradition of organising in Uruguay, given that the first Montenegrin community was established in 1912, in the city of Carmelo.
“A new modern community will work on strengthening the institutional links with the country of origin, registering Uruguayan citizens with Montenegrin origin and numerous other projects. It will closely cooperate with similar organisations in the region, such as the Montenegrin Community of Buenos Aires, and contribute forming of an umbrella organisation on the continent”, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration communicated.
Apart from the Ambassador Stojovic, the honorary consul of Montenegro to Uruguay, Mario Klisic, the honorary consul of Montenegro to the province Buenos Aires, Juan Carlos Lakovic, and the Secretary of the Montenegrin Community in Buenos Aires, Sofija Lakonic, gave speeches at the inaugural assembly.
Tomas Saranovic has been appointed president and coordinator of establishing the Montenegrin Community in Eastern Republic of Uruguay. Forty members of assembly of the youngest organisation in Montenegrin diaspora have been nominated.
