How was the GRU agent discovered: Help from British and US secret services?

Sjedište britanskih tajnih službi MI5 i MI6

New evidence that demonstrated that Russian national Eduard Shirokov, one of the organizers of attempted terrorist attack in Montenegro was actually Eduard Shishmakov, member of Russian Main Intelligence Agency GRU, points to significant role of British and US secret services, Pobjeda daily writes.

It is clear that these intelligence services gave support to investigation, and world media published an intriguing story on Moscow’s role in destabilization of Montenegrin leadership.

Part of NATO network

Security expert from Belgrade Darko Trifunovic said for Pobjeda that Montenegrin investigators were helped by British and US intelligence services, which basically means Montenegro is already a part of NATO security network.

“There are only a few more countries left that need to ratify the Protocol. The fact is Djukanovic was seating next to some of the most powerful people in the world during the last NATO summit, which means Montenegro will have powerful allies. This investigations demonstrates Montenegro joined a very strong security architecture”, Trifunovic said for Pobjeda daily.

By publishing information on Russian military officer Shishmakov, Montenegro became breaking news in world media from Reuters to Associated Press, British Daily Telegraph, SKy News, US New York Times and Politico.

Trifunovic said that British media are reporting on Russian involvement in Montenegro partially due to the fact that UK has its own problems with Russian agents.

The problem of Britain

“What Russians attempted in Montenegro is only a prelude for what they will attempt in other countries”, Trifunovic said, reminding of Russian involvement in the US presidential elections.

He said that Russia, as a big country and a powerful safety force, has a possibility of asymmetrical warfare and hybrid conflicts.
