The International Monetary Fund (IMF) recommended to the Montenegrin Government introducing ecological tax and reducing pensions and salaries in order to reduce the public debt. This was said at today’s press conference by the head of the IMF Mission for Montenegro, Martin Petri.
“We believe that there are taxes that are more compatible with growth. Those are various environmental taxes, as well as consumption taxation. When it comes to environmental taxes, we are considering increasing the excise on coal and the possible introduction of a carbon monoxide tax,” Petri said.
He pointed out to other areas where the government can reduce spending.
“Especially when it comes to public sector salaries, as well as allocations for pensions that are high in relation to international standards,” he pointed out, adding that these reforms require careful preparation.
