Jackson: USA see Montenegro as a normal European country

“Montenegro’s entry into NATO will be a stabilizing factor in the Western Balkans and South East Europe as a whole. The financial crisis in Greece, the problems of Turkey and the complete paralysis of Macedonia jointly weakened Southeast Europe. A positive decision on Montenegro is the first major step in the right direction. At the very least, this will enable the EU to better cope with the refugee crisis”, Jackson said in an interview for Pobjeda daily.

He added Montenegro is percieved as a normal European state, in contrast to perception from the past, when it was considered part of the communist Eastern Europe or chaotic and war-torn areas of the Balkans.

“These perceptions are forgotten and Montenegro is now, among other things, even considered a very desirable tourist destination”, said Jackson.

Asked if he expected better relations between Russia and Montenegro after Montenegro got invited to join NATO, Jackson replied Russia is going through its own problems at the moment, and that it’s unhappy for many things.

“One of the advantages Montenegro is bringing into NATO is its understanding of Russia and its ability to maintain good diplomatic relations with this country. This will be a valuable skill for Europe in the future”, he concluded.
