Jakič: We will advocate for EU enlargement in the WB

Jakič

Slovenian MP and former defense and foreign affairs minister, Roman Jakič, in an interview with Pobjeda daily told he’s happy that the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe, ALDE, is going to be part of the new set-up in the EU Commission, as they have been advocating for the EU enlargement since forever. The EU enlargement in the Western Balkans will be the topmost priority, according to Mr Jakič.

“The Liberals will be able to promote their program, and for them, the EU enlargement is the number one priority,” Mr Jakič said.

When asked about his expectations from the German presidency over the EU Council, he said he appreciated German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, very much. “Not just as a German politician but as a real driving force in the EU enlargement. That is why I am sorry to hear she won’t take part in the new Commission even though I hope someone would convince her to stay.”

Commenting on the 2019 Montenegro Progress Report and critics of our country, Mr Jakič said that every European Commission report should be taken seriously. “We should see whether issues denoted in reports can be solved fast or not. The EC reports have never been written in order to criticize a country but rather convey views on certain issues.”
