Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov said he was convinced that there would be a wake-up call in Montenegro when it came to Russia, adding that the country stopped mentioning the Russia’s involvement in the attempted terrorism case.
“Here, Montenegro has (now) stopped mentioning the Russia’s involvement in events about which they were so verbally concerned (the attempt of the state coup and assassination of Milo Djukanovic last year that the citizens of Russia and Serbia are suspected of). Nevertheless, I believe that there will a wake-up call,” Lavrov said.
As the Deutsche Welle writes, when asked to comment on US accusations about the role of Russia in Southeast Europe, Lavrov ironically said that “Russia was not blamed only for the Balkans, but also for interfering with Mexico, and possibly somewhere else as well”.
Explaining the role of Russia in the Balkans, Lavrov said that Russia “was blamed everywhere” and, as far as Serbia is concerned, “the country (Serbia) was being blamed for everything that was happening in the Balkans”.
Explaining specifically the role of Moscow in the Balkans, Lavrov said at a press conference at the United Nations headquarters in New York that the Balkan states were “traditional and close friends” of Russia, because, as he pointed out, some of them shared the same religion with the Russians.
“I do not see any other role,” said the Russian foreign minister.
Lavrov further commented on the work of the base in Nis. He called to mind that the centre had provided assistance to many countries, “not only Serbia, but also Montenegro and, even more countries towards the west”.
