LGBT persons live safely only in Podgorica

Five years ago, when the first Pride parade was held in Budva, it seemed impossible that Montenegrin society would be able to accept differences. Back then, a group of citizens tried to stop the parade by brutally attacking the police and the participants of the parade.

Today, after five organized parades, progress is obvious. LGBT community never gave up on their rights, and with the help of competent institutions, they managed to create safer environment.

Sixth Pride parade will be held in Podgorica tomorrow. The message is the same and still quite unacceptable to some: they want to live freely, safely and without fear, violence and discrimination.

Seems like Podgorica is the only safe place for them now. In other towns it’s still impossible to organize any event of this kind.

Danijel Kalezić, from Queer Montenegro, says that they hope there will be improvements regarding this domain. Freedom must exist anywhere and any time, not only in Podgorica. He adds that they are proud to know that more and more young people are becoming more free in expressing their sexual orientation. Social resistance is declining and LGBT persons are becoming more and more visible in the public life.
