Maddocks: Govt. should respect international obligations regarding seized cigarettes

Karen Medoks

“The United Kingdom, in addition to other international partners, is closely cooperating with Montenegro in order to develop capacities to fight against the smuggling of illegal goods through Montenegrin ports, airports and international borders”, British Ambassador Karen Maddocks says in an interview for the RTCG portal.

“Montenegro now, after the impressive and unprecedented seizure of cigarettes, has a valuable opportunity to achieve a significant increase in its reputation as a serious and credible international partner in the fight against serious and organized crime and corruption”, she stresses.

“There may never be another opportunity like this to set an example for adopting the highest standards for dealing with the problem of the illicit tobacco trade. This requires the Government to rid itself of illegal goods in accordance with international and domestic legislation”, Maddocks adds.

“Together with our international partners, we are working with Montenegrin law enforcement and prosecution authorities to increase their ability to identify and seize goods accumulated through serious and organized crime”, she points out.
